Biochemical Process Engineering
Biochemical Process Engineering focuses on developing eco-friendly technologies that optimize the utilization of renewable and fossil-based carbon resources, emphasizing keeping carbon "in the loop" for a circular and sustainable society.
Through the integration of molecular biology, metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, fermentation, and process modelling, we integrate biotechnology and chemistry to develop novel processes for the use of lignocellulosic resources and CO2 emitted from industrial activities as valuable feedstocks for the production of fuels, chemicals, materials, feed and nutraceuticals.
Post-consumer waste, like plastics and textiles, also represent an untapped carbon potential, that are not always efficiently recycled due to the complex nature of the material. By developing mild chemical processes, combined with microbial technologies, we are focusing on different pathways for upcycling the carbon potential in these materials. By recycling carbon into materials, we effectively sequester it for many years, creating a sustainable loop that mitigates its release into the atmosphere and contributes to long-term environmental preservation.
Furthermore, our research activities extend to developing novel remediation approaches, utilizing biological systems for efficient and sustainable removal of environmental pollutants. By combining cutting-edge research with practical applications, we strive to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future while maximizing the utilization of carbon resources across various sectors.
