Two different degrees awarded
- the Swedish degree of "Teknologie/Ekonomie Magister i (huvudämnet), inriktning mot (fördjupning)"
translated into English as "Master of Science with a major in (study major). Specialisation in (the programme specialisation)"
- the Swedish degree of "Magisterexamen med inriktning mot (the study major)", translated into English as
"Degree of Master of (the study major)".
Information on degrees awarded for specific programmes is found in the programme descriptions.
Please note that these degrees do not correspond to the Swedish professional degrees.
Entry requirements
Students from non-Swedish universities must hold a Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, in social science or
engineering. Applicants enrolled in European Diploma engineering programmes, or the equivalent, should
have completed at least three years of their studies. Applicant must also meet special requirements for each
programme.
- You can apply even if you haven´t graduated yet. Send us your transcripts of your major courses as a start
and then complement your application when you have your Bachelor degree (not later than summer 2004).
Language
A high level of spoken and written English is required. Luleå University of Technology accepts only these language tests and minimum scores:
Cambridge CPE or CAE, Pass;
IELTS (academic), 6;
TOEFL, 550;
TOEFL computer based, 213; and TOEIC, 750.
Students from certain countries are exempted from providing a language test.

Choose a maximum of one main programme (first alternative) and one reserve programme (second alternative), in order of preference. Please use the codes below:

2. The Education Summary Form.
Your application must be accompanied by officially certified copies, with translations in English, of the following documents, sorted in this order:
3. English language test documentation. Applicants who have studied most of their university education in any of the following countries do not need to present an accepted English test: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom and USA. No other countries are exempted.
Only any one of the following tests and minimum scores are accepted:
Cambridge CPE/CAE: Pass
IELTS (academic): 6.0
TOEFL*: 550
TOEFL (computer based): 213
TOEIC: 750
* Neither Institutional TOEFL nor other certificates from universities are accepted as proof of your English proficiency.
4. A copy of your passport.
5. Certificates and diplomas from previous university studies.
6. Transcripts of records including grades and course syllabus (relevant to the applied programme) from previous university studies. The purpose is to enable LTU to assess content and level of your studies.
7. Certificates of relevant work experience and other professional certificates, if any.
8. Name, address and kind of relation to your nearest relative.
The application must also be accompanied by the following signed documents, in English:

10. A personal letter explaining why you want to join this programme and what you expect from your studies at Luleå University.
11. Two letters of recommendation from your professor or supervisor about your university studies.
NOTE: All copies must be certified.
Application period between November 15, 2003 and February 1, 2004.
Personal responsibilities:
- personal health care insurance/medical insurance from your home country (obligatory)
- home insurance, third party insurance (recommended)
- accommodation
- personal registration
You are personally responsible for the arrangement of these issues before you arrive at Luleå University. You will not be allowed to start the program without personal health insurance/medical insurance.
If you are accepted to a Master´s program and fail to register in person at Luleå University of Technology before September 6, 2004, you are not longer entitled to your place in the program and forfeit your place.
Selection
Acceptance to the programmes is decided by the Admission Office. Their decision is final and not subject to appeal.
Confirmation
Accepted students will be notified by letter of their admission in April. Your confirmation of attendance must be received by Luleå University of Technology before June 20, 2004. Courses start around September 1.
Residence permits
Foreign students applying for a residence permit will have to show documents proving financial support at a Swedish Embassy or Consulate.
Scholarships
No financial support is offered by Luleå University to foreign students other than the exemption from tuition fees.
You can make a note in your application if you are interested in a scholarship. We will then send a list to the Swedish Institute . They offers a limited number of scholarships to foreign students from any nationality.

Fees and living costs
There are no tuition fees for the International Master's Programmes given at Luleå University. However, students in Sweden face the full cost of living during their studies (housing, food, books, etc.). A Swedish student would spend around 7,500 SEK a month.
Student life
The academic year runs from late August to early June. During study periods, students spend most of their time at the university attending classes.
