Course Aim
After taking the course, the student should be able to: • give an account of the creation and development of the European Union, as well as of its organisation and institutions; • describe, explain and analyse the EU’s role as a global, regional and local actor within a range of relevant policy areas; and • analyse and scrutinise the EU’s impact on policy and politics in the member states, as well as the member states’ influence over common European politics.

Contents
The course begins with a basic introduction to the European Union, its components, as well as its functions and way of working within different policy areas. Concepts and theories relevant for the study of the EU are also discussed in this context. Thereafter are the relations between the EU and governmental as well as non-governmental actors treated, in addition to the creation of policy through interactions and negotiations between these actors. The course thereby covers the role of the European Union within a range of relevant policy areas, with a possibility for the students to study one or a few of these in-depth for the duration of the course.

Realization
Teaching consists principally of lectures and seminars, which should be seen as a complement to the required course readings. During the course, the students also write a research paper in which the role of the EU is examined in relation to a specific policy area. The off-campus course is entirely web-based and given via a course platform on the Internet. Lectures and seminar discussions are here held by the assistance of distance-spanning technology.

Examination
Written compulsory assignments and an active contribution to seminar discussions during the length of the course corresponds to 3 Hskp. An individually written research paper handed in at the end of the course corresponds to 4,5 Hskp.

Remarks
Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact ETS educational administration eduets@ltu.senot later than five days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
