Completed B-level course in political science, 30 ECTS.
Course Aim
After taking the course, the student should be able to: • Give an account of relevant organisation theories regarding public administration, as well as the different ideological and contextual factors that have influenced/influences the appearance of different management theories and –traditions; • exhaustively describe the founding ideas and key characteristics within different models of public administration, as well as discuss and analyse these by the use of central concepts in political science such as democracy, efficiency, legitimacy and accountability; • analyse and explain the ways in which globalisation and other societal changes constitute challenges or opportunities for the politics of public administration and management, and influences its changes over time; as well as • apply the models and concepts in public administration theory in order to independently analyse empirical cases.
Contents
The course introduces concepts and theoretical points of departure for the study of public administration and management. Within the scope of the course, a range of conditions for/varieties of administrative organisation, for instance New Public Management; Network- and Multi-Level Governance, are discussed through both empirical and theoretical approaches. Furthermore, a central part of the course comprises the study of different administrative models and –traditions accounts for the values of democracy; efficiency; legitimacy; and accountability.
Realization
Teaching consists principally of lectures and seminars, which should be seen as a complement to the required course readings. During the course, the students are also required to write and orally present a research paper on a pre-selected topic.
Examination
Written compulsory assignments and an active contribution to seminar discussions during the length of the course corresponds to 3 hp. An individually written/presented research paper corresponds to 4,5 hp.

Students must register for the courses themselves or contact ETS educational administration, eduets@ltu.se not later than five days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
