Campus Skellefteå students develop ideas

11 students from Campus Skellefteå has participated in" Lycksele Meeting spot" to produce prototypes in health, young entrepreneurship and skills. The three winning teams won SEK 120 000 to share and the opportunity to develop their services further. One of the winning team was FARPP - a mobile application that will engage health care staff to prescribe "Physical Activities on Prescription" more often, and help motivate patients to change their lifestyle.

Diego wants to increase the use of wood

When Diego Elustondo visited Skellefteå for a wood drying conference in 2010, he fell in love with the city, nature and people. It was therefore not a difficult decision for him to recently accept the position as Chaired Professor in Wood Physics at LTU in Skellefteå. Diego looks forward to his new work with both humility and confidence.

Success for Northern Sweden Pavilion at LIGNA 2013

Wood researchers from LTU Skellefteå have participated at the LIGNA fair in Hannover which is one of the world´s largest tradeshows for the Sawmill and Woodworking industry. The tradeshow had just over 2,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries. This year it is was more than 90,000 visitors from the whole world.

Process control and production strategies in the sawmill industry

How can the breakdown of logs at a sawmill be more efficient and how can the value of the timber be increased? Anders Berglund, researcher at LTU Skellefteå, has focused on the sawing process in the production chain and presented the results of his work at a licentiate seminar on May 17.

Nordsken - more than a game festival!

The third edition of the festival Nordsken has now ended. What in Skellefteå started with the establishing of Dreamhack is now a wider festival for all ages. Nordsken is a drug-free event for those interested in technology, computer games and table games (role-figure and card games). 120,000 SEK were distributed to students and staff at Campus Skellefteå seeking Sammes Foundation development grant. The purpose of the scholarship is to support business and product ideas.

Skeria-fonden gives 164.500 SEK to student activities in Skellefteå

The Student Association in Skellefteå received 67,000 SEK from Skeria-fonden for activities that will improve the student social environment at Campus Skellefteå. This is a contributions to gaming tournament, Ikea trip, laser evening, seating, entertainment, new equipment for rehearsal and to the student puc etc.

Inauguration of the new Student Reception Desk in Skellefteå

The Student Reception Desk in Skellefteå is now inaugurated! Marianne Tyboni has worked with service to students in Skellefteå since 1998 and both Marianne and the students are pleased with the new facilities in the B-building at Campus Skellefteå.

WoodCenter North will develop internationally

High Tech products in wood is the base for WoodCenter North (TCN) at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå to extend its international cooperation. VINNOVA has recently granted SEK 600 000 to stimulate the construction of TCN's international research and innovation network.

Frans and Carl Kempe memory foundation

On the 30th of October Niclas Björngrim at Wood Products Engineering was awarded 100 000 sek from Frans and Carl Kempe memory foundation. The money will be used to build a laboratory scale bridge in cross laminated timber (CLT). CLT is a type of engineered wood that is gaining in popularity due to high stiffness to weight ratio.

Students in Skellefteå get scholarship for good ideas

Sammes stiftelse has now awarded four of the LTU-students in Skellefteå for their business ideas. Students in Skellefteå will also in spring 2013 be able to apply for additional scolarships for development of their ideas and business scholarship. Further a scholarship for working with the ideas during the summer.

Skeria fund Scholarships 2012

This years Skeria Fund Scholarship at approximately 150,000 SEK will be given for activities that increase interest and knowledge of research and education at Campus Skellefteå. The money will also go to activities which improves the students' social environment.

How planing affects warp

My research is focused on how planing affects the warp types twist, crook, bow and cup as well as how these warp types affects the result of planing says Ann Axelsson. The goal is to be able to predict the appropriate allowance for planing and planer settings before sawing of planks and boards so that the planed timber in the end has the sought dimensions and shape.

Nordeas Norrlandsstiftelses travel grant 2012

In 1999 Nordeas Norrlandsstiftelse established an annual travel grant of SEK 50,000 for graduate students at LTU Skellefteå. The travel grant is to be used for study / research outside Sweden and the aim is to promote scientific research in order to develop entrepreneurship in our region.

LTU students receive scholarship for developing their ideas during the summer

Sammes Foundation has distributed nearly 500,000 SEK for scholarship to students who want to work with their idéas as summer business. Four of the projects belongs to students at LTU Skellefteå.
- We want to create a PC game for the commercial market, says Felix Hansson. Felix is part of a group of game developers who have received money from Sammes Foundation.

Researchers at the Department of Wood Science and Engineering in Skellefteå presented their research at 2012 Researchers Seminar, May 21. This was a seminar for researchers and the purpose was to discuss the ongoing research conducted in Skellefteå.

Research in Skellefteå - the " nail log" is now inaugurated

We want to alert researchers in Skellefteå who passes a licentiate and doctoral theses. Therefore, the old academic tradition to nail the thesis for public view has now ben introduced at Campus Skellefteå. A new tradition of hanging of licentiate thesis has also ben introduced. The aim is to highlite the research which is beeing conducted locally and make it more accessible. The log for nailing/hanging is placed in the Forum building.

Tommy Vikberg Teknologie licentiat in the subject Wood Physics

Tommy Vikberg presented his licentiate thesis with the title ”Moisture Content Measurement in the Wood Industry” on the 26th of April at LTU in Skellefteå. In the thesis 13 different methods, with their own pros and cons, to determine the moisture content is discussed. The use of X-rays to determine the sapwood moisture content of logs is given extra attention.

194.000 SEK for student Ideas with development potential

Sammes Foundation has now selected 16 student projects for the Development award. The intention of the award is that the applicants shall be able to achieve necessary skills to develop new products and services.

Ljungberg Fund invests

The Ljungberg Fund has donated 100,000 SEK for the marketing of wood and timber University technology programs. It is important for Sweden to develop wood, timber and sustainable wood construction University technology programs, in order to meet the expected future demand in the related skilled labor market. Our new Assistant Professor Alice Wang visited her future workplace. Alice comes from Université Laval, Quebec, and will be moving to Skellefteå with her family and start working here next year.

The Raiser Innovation Award for Friction Welding.

Mojgan Vaziri, Division of Wood Science and Engineering, has together with three other scientists received The Raiser Innovation Award for Friction Welding.

The object of this worldwide first award in Friction Welding is to encourage research and development. Especially young people from science and economy should be supported and encouraged to present their innovative developments in all fields of Friction Welding.

Laser scanner on its way to WPE

WPE is about to buy a laser scanner to scan rooms and buildings in 3D. The scanner will be used in our research and will provide opportunities for cooperation with the Computer Graphics program on campus.

Opening Ceremony for Scandinavias longest wooden bridge

The 130 meter long pedestrian and bicycle bridge between Anderstorp and Älvsbacka in Skellefteå is now opened. The bridge is as beautiful as functional and built in a span. The project was funded by the municipality of Skellefteå in cooperation with the European Regional Development Fund and Luleå University of Technology.

Bridge-building development - Lean in the wood industry

Thursday, August 25, Stiftelsen Träenigheten in cooperation with WoodCenter North, LTU, Trästad 2012 and SP Trätek, arranges a conference where development of timber construction are in focus. The conference starts with a visit to Skellefteås newly constructed and unique wooden bridge, and continues with a seminar at Campus Skellefteå on how to avoid wasting resources by using modern methods and new technologies.

The day ends with dinner, entertainment and presentation of Träenighetens award. Welcome!

LTU Skellefteå - host of the 20th IWMF conference

LTU Skellefteå is hosting the 20th IWMS conference since the start in 1963. 90 people from around the world participated. The idea of ​​the conference is to exchange information to improve and develop technology in wood processing. - Many of the participants have met before and have ongoing contact. The social intercourse and the warm atmosphere is equally important, says Professor Anders Grönlund, Director of IWMS in Skelleftea.
