Fire Protection Engineer

A secure, safe and operational society is necessary for an effective and durable development. To succeed with this, the tasks of a fire engineer is vital- especially when the unexpected happens. Studying to become a fire protection engineer you'll read mainly about fire technology but risk management is also an essential part of the education.

The fire protection engineering program at Luleå University consists of a base of natural science and fire protection technology. Included are also courses aimed to give the student knowledge about risks in the modern society. Courses are to give knowledge seen from different perspectives, identify risks, prevent accidents and limit damage.

The fact that the fire protection engineering program has got some behavioural science included as well as the natural science based courses makes the program unique at Luleå Universitet. The behavioural science focus are mostly to be found when reading risk management, psychological aspects on leadership and risk management and also distrubated decisionmaking and cultural meetings.

The education consists of theoretical lectures as well as practical exercises and laborations. Laborations are done at the university in cooperation with the emergency ** in Luleå and with trade and industry in the district.

A fire protection engineer should not only understand and have knowledge about how to extinguish a fire. He/She should have thorough knowledge in how to prevent fire but also in how to reduce the consequenses of a fire.

Todays society are becoming more and more complex, with more and more systems that are supposed to work with one another and which we've made ourself dependent of. The complexity also means that the system in many ways gets more vulnerable. Being a fire protection engineer is often a matter of being the step ahead- acting instead of reacting.
Fire protection engineers identifies risks, judge risks and gives possible solutions on how to reduce risks or to eliminate them totaly.

During your studies you'll reach understanding from both teorethical and practical studies. Reading about fires is one part, simulating fires with computers are another and you'll also get the possibility to study real fires under well controlled cermonies out on a special field and in buildings. The parts of your fire protectionn engineering education dealing with risk managing will include studying real cases, both accidets and happenings that almost turned into disasters. Different methods of risk management is discussed in relation to how different branches valuate and handle risks.

As a fire protection engineer you're suposed to express yourself well both in spoken word and in text and this are areas where you are trained during your studies at our division. The education gives you thorough understanding minly in fire technology and risk management but will also give you a broad base with knowledge in leadership, economy, law and engineering.
