Sweden's northernmost and newest Confucius Institute was inaugurated this week at Luleå University of Technology. It will convey knowledge of Chinese language and culture and in close cooperation with Luleå municipality schools and LTU conduct training. The Institute will, among other things convey academic contacts- I really wish that we get good cooperation and exchange between our universities and between our cities and I think Luleå Confucius Institute has a very important role to play in that context, said Xu Delong, Xian University Vice Chancellor.

He was one of 12 people in a delegation representing China. He talked at length about friendships and historical links between Sweden and China. Although countries are far apart, we have a very long history of friendship and exchange, he pointed out and exemplified by the merchant ship Gothenburg, 200 years ago was carrying porcelain and silk to Sweden.

- This is a great day for Luleå University of Technology, a day when we take another step into the international arena, said Johan Sterte Vice Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology in conjunction with the inauguration of the Confucius Institute in Lulea.

Johan Sterte pointed in his inaugural speech in particular that he sees the Confucius Institute as a first step in an exchange of people between northern Sweden and China. It is important that people meet and talk, he emphasized and quoted the philosopher Confucius, who gave the Institute its name "you should not talk about the sea with a frog sitting in the lake." High school students from Luleå, reciting poetry in Chinese

- Luleå's Confucius Institute will become an important part of our region's internationalization in that it also will work with the City of Luleå elementary and secondary schools, she says.

In Luleå's schools are already under way teaching in Chinese language and the inauguration was attended by some students with their newfound language skills could recite an entire Chinese poem. The focus is that the institute should strengthen cooperation and exchanges in education and in particular to stimulate interest in Chinese language and culture. This will be achieved through courses, lectures, seminars at both the LTU and in Luleå municipality's schools.

LTU's Vice Chancellor Johan Sterte would like university students to be broadminded and states that the university is already working with many countries. In a new international approach that LTU is about to implement, where the focus is to become more active internationally, is to develop cooperation with the alliance universities. By the Confucius Institute LTU will have, a new partner in Xian University of Arcitecture and Technology.

- It is a university that has many similarities with ours and with the potential for more extensive cooperation than is the case today, says Johan Sterte.
