NSS - Nordic Safety and Security

NSS - Nordic Safety and Security, is a large EU-project within the CRR area. The goal of the project is to make northern Sweden an important actor in the area of safety, risk assessment, and crisis management

EISLAB is contributing with expertise in Wireless Sensor Networks, WSN, where we plan to equip firefighters as well as important infrastructure, such as buildings, bridges, etc, with smart and low power wireless sensors. The sensor platform used in the project is the Mulle, a wirelessly networked sensor node designed for low power operation. Research will be performed within the following areas: mesh networks, multi-hop routing, development of TinyOS applications, and robust wireless communication. The aim is to develop a mesh sensor network, capable of tracking individual firefighters during exercises and in hazardous environments. Monitoring of infrastructures is also of interest.

In the project we have Luleå university of Technology LTU, Umeå University, UmU, and Totalförsvarets forskningsanstalt, FOI, in Umeå. Projektet is funded by EU and the participants.
