The University of Oulu is a place of work and study for over 16,000 students and 3000 staff; a high quality, international-level science community securing well-being in northern Finland. The University of Oulu celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2008.
The University of Oulu is the third largest universitiy in Finland with an exceptionally wide academic base. Internationally pioneering research is conducted as a collaboration of different disciplines.
The multidisciplinary university has three foucus areas; The fields of information technology, Biotechnology, Northern and Environmental Issues. The University cooperates closely with industry and commerce, and has broad connections with hundreds of international research and educational institutions.
The university has six faculties and their departments form a multi-disciplinary academic community that enables diversified studies based on multifaceted research. The faculties are; Humanities, Education, Science, Medicine, Economics and Business Administration and Technology.

Short history of the collaboration
The collaboration between University of Oulu and Luleå University of Technology started formally through the alliance agreement that were signed for the first time 2002. But collaboration between the both universities had been going on long before that. It had been cooperation between single persons and different divisions at our both universities.
Today every department at Luleå University of Technology has cooperation and collaboration in different extent. It is in research, education as well as in projects. Researchers, teachers and administration staffers are involved and there is also a cooperation between the student’s union. The both universities activities complete each other which give each partner possibilities to broaden their activities both in research and education. University of Oulu and Luleå University of Technology have also similar topics that are in interest to deepen.
