The European FP7 WSAN4CIP project focuses on the ICT theme and covers the Objective ICT-SEC-2007.1.7 of the joint call between the ICT Theme and the Security Theme on Critical Infrastructure Protection. The goal of this project is to increase the dependability of Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs) significantly beyond the current state of the art. By that WSAN will become a "technology building blocks for creating, monitoring and managing secure, resilient and always available information infrastructure.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have a significant beneficial impact on every aspect of our lives while generating huge opportunities for European industry. What is needed to kick off the development and exploitation of WSNs is an architecture for medium and large scale wireless sensor networks integrating comprehensive security capabilities right from the concept stage. This would support the rapid development of sensor networks and would open up the application domain for commercial activities.

As part of the I2 project (Intelligenta Inlandsvägen) a portable mesh network running on batteries has been specified and deployed for demonstration at several proving grounds for vehicles tested in northern Sweden.
In December 2009 the project SATIN started with the aim to enable end users to create "their own" mobile services, without prior programming competence. This three year long project with a total investment of 3.2 M EUR is financed by the EU structural funds, the County administrative board of Norrbotten, the Norrbotten County Council and the City of Luleå.
