Karin Jonasson took home a price for her master's thesis

Karin Jonasson, a former student of Master Programme in Industrial and Management Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, won a price for her master's thesis.

The essay is called Risk management in major projects: A case study of project Kiruna new railway. The Swedish Project Academy describes it as well-written, ambitious and consistently of high quality.

– I was on a tour in Kebnekaise when they called and told that I had won. The prize is a scholarship of SEK 10 000 and of course I was both flattered and excited, says Karin Jonasson.

Background to the work

Due to the breaking of iron ore under the ground in Kiruna deformations have appeared in the ground. These approaches the society more and more. Therefore habitation and infrastructure needs to be moved. The railway are mainly affected and therefore is the ongoing construction of a new rail line in full swing. In her thesis, Karin Jonasson studied risk management in project Kiruna new railway.

What is risk management?

– Short, one can say that it is about identifying risks, estimating the probability of their occurrence and to assess how serious the consequences are. Based on that, you get a risk number that leads to an order of priorities. That is how important it is to address the risk, says Karin Jonasson.

Do you have any tips for those who are about to write their master's thesis?

– Yes, I have a few things that I can say, says Karin Jonasson.

  1. Think about what you really want to write about.
  2. Think about what companies that fit your idea and what companies you want to learn more about.
  3. Contact the appropriate key people in the companies and pitch your idea. Give them examples of different research questions.
  4. When you start working, try to sit on the company. Then you are close to people who work with what you write about. You will also more easily get into the team.
  5. Have discipline and work full time with the thesis. It may be difficult to achieve. But if you sit in an office with people who work full time, it becomes much easier.
  6. Try taking off a whole week instead of a few hours here and there. It is better to disconnect everything for a period to then focus entirely on writing!
