Introduction to friction and wear in unlubricated contacts

The main goal is to give you basic understanding of tribology of lubricated contacts.

When the student has finished the course he or she will be able to:
• understand the difference between plastic and elastic contact
• understand the mechanisms of friction and when the different mechanisms dominate
• understand the relations between friction and wear
• discuss and interpret friction curves from lab tests
• describe the most important mechanisms of wear and surface deterioration
• discuss the significance of surface transformations on the friction and wear behaviour
• describe the most important mechanisms of wear and surface deterioration
• discuss possible failure criteria in relation to wear of different tribological applications
