SYLLABUS

The basic theoretical assumptions of qualitative research methods will be discussed and problematised. Further, qualitative methods of data collection, such as interviews, observations, narratives, text interpretation, aesthetic expression, participating research, will be examined and discussed in relation to various fields of research. The course will also examine different forms of data analysis in relation to respective qualitative methods.

The course constitutes a response to the emerging need for knowledge about various dynamic and creative methods for the collection and analysis of empirical material, as well as documentation of research results. We will critically examine and discuss methods like ‘reflecting narratives’ and documentation by images, music, movement, photo and video, all in relation to research projects pursued by the course participants. We will also examine the connection between these methods and various theoretical frameworks.

VT-11 Multidimensional Perspectives on Qualitative Research

The course addresses a growing need for dynamic and creative multimodal methods for documentation and analysis of empirical data and results in multimodal form. Within the framework of this course reflective narrative, documentation in the form of music, pictures, photos, movement and video will undergo a critical review and discussion related to doctoral student’s different research projects. Underlying theories behind the different methods will also be treated and discussed.
