An investigation of contaminated areas conducted by Swedish County Adminstrative Boards has revealed sites polluted by arsenic. A number of sites are contaminated in such a manner that they possess a negative impact on the surroundings or on human health and thereby, the sites need to be treated by the year 2010.

Sustainable stormwater management (2008-2011)

The development of a sustainable stormwater is slow and the management of the city’s stormwater seems to be a subordinated process in urban planning. It is often governed by tradition and conventional approaches regardless available knowledge of alternative solutions. Traditionally, this has resulted in underground pipes which provide a system with inherent problems from several aspects. The linear use of pipes is contradictory when it comes to an urban sustainable development.

Climate change, e.g. more intense rainfall events, will affect urban drainage systems, and cause problems in cities. There is a need to understand and assess these impacts and consequences better. In many cities in Sweden, the rate of renewal of pipe systems is very low, but it is likely that renovation activities will increase. When urban water systems are replaced, climate change must be considered. The design of the future urban water system must take the climate change into account. What will be the problems and/or the possibilities? Which water system will cause most problems in a technical way or in an economical? Will it be a more energy demanding system? Will the systems be less sustainable?
