The Conference started with registration i the Yard of Light. Three sessions later we had a cocktail party to establish new contacts and maintain old ones.
The second day had four sessions and was rounded off with a boat trip to Jopikgården in the beautiful archipelago of Luleå.

At the Jopikgården we were served a delicious dinner: Homemade typical regional thin flat bread, grilled Salmon, smoked Whitefish and smoked Reindeer stew. The dinner was accompanied by the first mosquitos of the year.

POAC Founders Lifetime Achievement Award
|
|
This award was given to William M. Sackinger, former professor at University of Alaska in Fairbanks. His teaching and research included the fields of geophysics, electrical engineering, mechanical and chemical engineering, as well as patenting and licensing. His involvement with Port and Ocean Engineering began in 1971, studying millimeter-wave radar backscatter from sea ice.
Most of his sea ice research was motivated to discover details of sea ice forces against Arctic offshore structures. Serving as Technical Program Chairman for POAC 75 in Fairbanks, he became active in the POAC International Committee, serving some 24 years, including President of POAC in 1983-85, Chairman of POAC-87, and the POAC Secretary-General from 1995 to 2001

POAC Best Student Paper Award
|
|
The best student paper was selected from all submitted papers where the first author was registered as a student. After a careful judgement procedure of the committee this years price was given to Vegard Aksnes, PhD student at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. His paper “A simplified approach for modelling stochastic response of moored vessels in level ice” showed great theoretical and mathematical qualities and the presentation was excellent. A price sum of 1000 USD together with a certificate was awarded.

The 20th conference, POAC 09, will be held in Luleå, the capital of Swedish Lapland. POAC is the acronym for the International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions. Every second year since 1971 this conference on ice and cold regions engineering has provided an outstanding forum for discussion of new developments and research findings. Typically, there are about 150 participants at the conference presenting and discussing papers related to many ice engineering topics.
You are invited to submit a 300 word abstract by October 31, 2008, see instructions in left menu.
