The primary research interest of Annelie Hedström is sustainable technologies for municipal and domestic water and wastewater systems. To date, her research has been mainly about small scale wastewater treatment with a focus on sustainable solutions, including phosphorus and nitrogen recycling. Reactive filter systems was the primarily research area during her doctoral thesis work, regarding both adsorption and desorption of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds on different sorbents. Research on salix beds for wastewater treatment and local sludge treatment based on freezing, thawing, drying and composting have also been dealt with. A more recent research interest concerns the safe water supply and a current research project about early warning systems for drinking water supply.
