RESEARCH

My research interests are: (1) sediment and rock deformation, and (2) in situ stress and its measurements.

My research on sediment and rock deformation regards stress- and time dependent deformation of clay-rich sediments. Most of my research have been obtained from laboratory experiments using equipment consisting of one triaxial cell mounted in a servo-controlled load frame, and one oedometer cell mounted in a balance beam machine. The laboratory equipment was moved to Luleå University of Technology from Prof. Em. Daniel Karig's laboratory at Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University, USA in 2004, and has since then been updated. Close collaborators with are Prof. Julia Morgan, Rice University, USA, Prof. Em. Dan Karig, Cornell University, USA, and Prof. Achim Kopf, Bremen University, Germany.

I am also involved in the Swedish Deep Drilling Program and the Post-glacial fault drillining project with Ilmo Kukkonen, GTK, and Odleiv Olesen, NGU. We will roganize a ICDP workshop in October 2010.

My second field of interest is in-situ stress measurements, especially using borehole geometry logging tools (i.e. borehole breakouts and drillng induced fractures). In this field, I have been working with Daniel Ask, Vattenfall Power Consultant AB. We identified the occurrence of shallow, thermally induced borehole breakouts in the SKB preinvestigation site for storage of nucealr waste in Forsmark, Sweden. I have an ongoing project with Posiva Oy, Finland on analyzing acoustic televiewer data.

ONGOING PROJECTS:
