Welcome to the Division of Functional product development

Research, education and cooperation with Engineering Product Development as platform.

The division aspires to, through research, education, and cooperation, meet product developing companies’ needs to support and improve engineering design, with emphasis on life cycle development; Functional Products, or Product Service Systems.

Engineering Product Development of life-cycle commitments create new problems for the product development companies and via focus on:
- Functional Product Development (FPD)
- Knowledge Enabled Engineering (KEE)
- Team Based Innovation (TBI)
within Engineering Product Development we aim to be a strategic partner for companies that want to improve their ways of working to better meet future demands on product development.

Mikael Nybacka has during August started his new position at Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, with Professor Annika Stensson Trigell (former PhD advisor of Tobias Larsson). The research department has a focus on vehicle dynamics. We express our gratitude for the Luleå years and wish Mikael all the best in his future research endeavours!

Sustainable Innovation in the Amazon

2010-07: The Division of Functional Product Development recently co-organized a two-day course in Strategic Sustainable Development and two days of workshops on Sustainable Innovation – gathering a total of over 100 participants. The events were held in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazon, Brazil.

FPD in new facilities

2010-06: Since the FPD start in 2007, the division has developed in a dynamic mode and the research environment today consist of 30 researchers. When entering into the new department Economy, Technology & Society FPD also make a move in facilities and move into new spaces in the A building. Plenty of space for the "Inno-X" work mode (the FPD model for cross-functional collaboration). Welcome!

BBQ Cook off 2010

2010-06: The division’s annual BBQ Cook off took place on Tuesday evening June 22. As usual, the preparations started several weeks prior to the competition. This year’s competition also coincided with us moving out from the E-house. The day after we moved to our new offices in the A-house.

DESIGN’10 in Dubrovnik

2010:05. Two FPDers, Anna Karlsson and Marco Bertoni, have recently attended the 11th International DESIGN Conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The conference, hosted by the University of Zagreb, gathered 285 researchers and practitioners from 30 countries.

DESIGN is a bi-annual event organized by the Design Society and held in the picturesque town of Cavtat, on the Adriatic coast just south of Dubrovnik.

The Proceedings include 187 full-length papers, which have been grouped and presented in 34 separate sessions, filled up with 11 thematic workshops held at the margin of the conference mainstream.

2010-05: We are very pleased that Alessandro Bertoni has decided to join the division and wish him welcome as a new member of the Functional Product Development staff. He will mainly contribute to the CRESCENDO project together with Volvo Aero. Professor Tobias Larsson and Professor Ola Isaksson will do their best as Alessandro’s supervisors. To present Alessandro we have made a short interview.

The first meeting in the Knowledge Enabled Engineering post-graduate course

2010-04: The course focus on how product development can be enhanced by means of knowledge enabled engineering. The first meeting contained Engineering 2.0 and design automation and theory has been varied with hands on exercises. Esa Ryhänen from ERules presented his Sandvik Coromant design automation work. The participants work at TFM.

LTU and Division of Functional Product Development together with KTH and Division of Integrated Product Development participated as speakers at Konkurrenskraft 2010, April 22. The purpose was to show the work that has been done in the program PIEp. The participants at the exhibit had the possibility to test Radical Innovation Workshop together with Mikael Nybacka (LTU) and Sofia Ritzen (KTH).

CIRP IPS2 in Linköping

2010-04: The international CIRP conference on Integrated Product Service Systems (IPS2) was held in Linköping April 13-17. With some 80 papers and 120 attendees from all over the world it was a key event for the research in product/service systems. The division contributed with 5 scientific papers.

DIM project seminar

2010-04: The Interreg IV A Nord research project DIM – Digital Integrated Manufacturing – has today held an open seminar at LTU. The project is a cross regional program that spans over the Northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Sápmi. The three academic partners, Narvik University College, Norway, Centria (a research unit of Central Ostrobothnia Polytechnic), Finland and Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, presented their research efforts within the project for an audience of industry representatives. Henrik Nergård, also the moderator for today’s seminar and Christian Johansson are the representatives from the division that contributes to the research project. Tobias Larsson and Åsa Ericson take part as representatives in the steering group.

TMCE 2010, Ancona

2010:04. Marco Bertoni from the division has recently attended the Eighth International Symposium on Tools and Methods of Competitive Engineering, TMCE 2010 in Ancona, Italy (April 12 – 16), organized by the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Italy, and the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

2010-04: April 13-17 in Linköping, the Division of Functional Product Development together with Linköping University, KTH and VINNOVA, arranges an international conferenc, a national workshop, and finally a network meeting for the international product/service systems network.

Welcome as PhD candidate, Johan!

2010-04: We are very pleased that Johan Holmqvist has decided to join the division and wish him welcome as a new member of the Functional Product Development staff. He will mainly contribute to the FFI project Fuel Efficient Transmission Technology Concepts: Design Methodology together with Volvo Construction Equipment. Professor Tobias Larsson and PhD Åsa Ericson will do their best as Johan’s supervisors. To present Johan we have made a short interview.

Networked Innovation

2010-03: March 25:th Peter Törlind visited the Nederland’s for a workshop in the project "Developing a designerly approach to networked innovation".
The venue was the DAF museum in Eindhoven, an interesting and inspiring meeting place.

Doctoral course in Design Observation

2010-03: International Design Observation Network (IDON) Doctoral Course organized by Grenoble University (France) and Luleå Technical University (Sweden) will be held in June 2010 (web seminars) and in July in Grenoble (france) (co-located workshop and seminars from 5th to 9th July, 2010)

Visit at Design Factory

2010-03: Peter Törlind visited the design Factory during one week to deepen the collaboration between LTU/PIEp and the Aalto University.

Design factory is one of three factories at Aalto University, that specialises on multidisciplinary research between the three schools at Aalto University. (School of Art and Design, School of Economics, School of Science and Technology)

Welcome Ilya!

2010-03: Ilya Tyapin has joined the division for one year as a Post Doc within the METOPIA project. He has among others done research considering optimization of industrial robots such as Parallel Kinematic Machines in collaboration with ABB Robotics, Sweden. Last autumn Ilya has completed his PhD in Mechatronics and Computer Science at University of Queensland, Australia.

2010-02: Professor Tobias Larsson has been a member of the core team behind the recently released national research agenda in aeronautics, "NRA Flyg 2010", which includes concrete targets for 2020 and 2040 as well as prioritized research areas in aeronautical engineering - both nationally and internationally.

Workshop with Billerud

2010-02: Mikael Nybacka and Mattias Bergström have in collaboration with Billerud performed a workshop based on an innovation topic. The representatives from Billerud were interested in trying out and test the methods for team based innovation that have been developed at the division. As facilitators of the activities we were impressed and inspired of the representatives’ enthusiasm and capability to “play the game”. We hope to see you again and wish Billerud the best in their future innovation projects.

2010-02: Friday 5 February Johan Holmqvist presented his Master thesis. The work is done at the division of Functional Product Development, partly involved in a research project regarding Global Team Based Innovation.

Meritxell presents her thesis

2010-02: On Friday Feb. 5th Meritxell Pijoan i Forcada from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya has successfully presented her Master thesis in room E231.

The thesis, titled “Interaction between cars and their drivers in twenty years time”, has been developed under the supervision of the Division of Functional Product Development and in collaboration with the Division of Industrial Design.

Open Talk: Steve Wiseall, Rolls Royce UK

2010-02: Steve Wiseall from Rolls Royce UK held an open talk on Monday Feb. 1st in the M7015T course.

Steve is Team Leader of the Cost Modelling Strategy group at RR. He is currently involved in the CRESCENDO project, dealing with issues related to Value Generation and Requirement Establishment.

CRESCENDO Value Engineering Workshop in Luleå

2010-02: On February 2nd-4th the Division of Functional Product Development hosted the third EU FP7 CRESCENDO WP2.2 physical meeting.

Marco Bertoni, Tobias Larsson and Christian Johansson have welcomed in Luleå representatives from Volvo Aero, Rolls-Royce UK, EADS, University of Southampton, INSIA Toulouse and Pyramis. The meeting had the purpose to clarify current approaches for requirement establishment in the aircraft industry and to discuss the way product development for complex systems can be initiated in favour of a more value-oriented approach.

2009-12: On Dec. 18th, Christian Johansson, Division of Functional Product Development, presented and defended his Ph.D. thesis "Knowledge Maturity as Decision Support in Stage-Gate Product Development: a Case from the Aerospace Industry". Opponent was Dave Randall, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the grading committee consisted of Docent Sofia Ritzén, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, Professor Johan Ölvander, Linköpings Universitet and Professor Anita Mirijamdotter, Växjö Universitet.

New project; Robust Machining

2009-12: The VINNOVA programme for vehicular research "Fordonsstrategisk Forskning och Innovation - FFI", has decided to fund the research project "Robust Machining" with 10 million SEK. The project runs over 2009-2012 and has a total budget of 24 MSEK. Within the project FPD will research knowledge intense applications for manufacturing, Knowledge Engineering.

2009-12: Today, Mikael Nybacka, Division of Functional Product Development, presented and defended his Ph.D. thesis "Exploring technologies for service provision in automotive winter testing". Opponent was Professor Jochen Pohl, Linköping University, and the grading committee consisted of Dr. Anders Claesson, Saab Automobile, Professor Emeritus Jan-Gunnar Persson, KTH, and Professor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Luleå University of Technology.

Value-Driven Design Workshop in Winchester

2009-12: On Dec. 8th, Marco Bertoni from the Division has attended the Value-Driven Design (VDD) workshop, hosted by the University of Southampton, an FPD partner within the EU FP7 CRESCENDO project. The one-day workshop has been supported by Rolls-Royce and held in the beautiful Winchester Guildhall, UK.

2009-11: Christian Johansson and Mikael Nybacka, according to LTU tradition, nailed their thesis’s to the library wall, "Knowledge maturity as decision support in stage-gate product development : a case from the aerospace industry" and ”Exploring technologies for service provision in automotive winter testing” respectively. This was the final task before the defense that takes place December 17 at 9am in B192 for Mikael and December 18 at 9am in B192 for Christian.

2009-11: During this year's academic celebration at Luleå University of Technology, the FPD PhD's Mattias Bergström and Henrik Nergård received their signs of being PhD's from LTU; the hat and the diploma.

Open Talk: Professor Tobias Larsson, FPD/LTU

2009-10: Tobias Larsson, professor and responsible for the functional product development domain at LTU, gave an open talk entitled "Increasing Industrial Competitiveness through Product-Service Systems" at LTU today. Tobias linked the challenges of the manufacturing industry to the new business models of "selling functions"; Product-Service Systems and they way to produce the products to be part of such offerings; the Functional Product Development process.

2009-10: Åsa Ericson, Tobias Larsson and Marcus Sandberg from the Division of Functional product development visited Gestamp Hardtech and organised a workshop where the latest research was presented and discussions of future collaborations took place.

2009-10: Jenny Åhman, Project Manager at Volvo 3P and former LTU student held an open talk today in the M7014T course, describing the Volvo Global Development Process and its declination in the design of new trucks and truck components.

ProViking result day 2009

The annual result day for ProViking was this year held at Aspenäs Manor outside Gothenburg, where 15 projects presented their results. ProViking is a national research program designed to create improved systems of production and new methods of product development. From Luleå University of Technology three projects participated; THINK, ProAct and InMaint.

Pär "Mentor of the Year" in Norrbotten"

"Almi Företagsparnter" have chosen Pär Johansson (PhD student at FPD) as "Mentor of the Year" in Norrbotten. This means that Johansson is finalist in the Swedish final for Mentor of the Year, that takes place October 14 in Stockholm.

Division Days with strategies in focus

2009-09: We have during two days been in Arjeplog and intensively worked with strategies, research and education in a workshop format. After several attempts, we finally succeeded to find a date when almost all of us could go. At last, we could start the internal work. Also, we had the opportunity to get to know all our new colleagues: Koteshwar Chirumalla, Anna Karlsson, Åsa Kastensson och Peter Thor. Welcome!

Presentation in Zagreb

Peter Törlind was invited as a lecturer for the Academia/Industry workshop organized by the University of Zagreb. Peter gave a lecture via video link, which focused on creative approaches to product development.

Peter Törlind participated both as a jury, and expert in the 24 hour race which was arranged by LTU Innovation.

Congratulations Andreas, Associate Professor!

2009-09: Today, the Faculty Board at LTU decided to, with support from expert evaluations, to promote Andreas Larsson (PhD) to Associate Professor in the research subject Functional Product Development. Below, Andreas gives his view on the research subject.

- "I think it is particularly exciting to see that industry companies are now showing an increased interest in supporting also the social dimensions of product development", says Andreas, who in his PhD thesis from 2005 wrote about the importance of 'know-who' (knowing who knows something about a certain topic) in product development, an interest which he has continued to pursue on his path towards the Associate Professorship.
