Heat treatment of wood is a method using an environmentally friendly process changing the timbers
properties. The technology used in Scandinavia is based on drying and heating in
steam environment, either superheated steam (ThermoWood) or saturated steam (WTT). In
both cases the wood reacts quite similar, and it is reflected in an improved
dimensional stability and resistance, a reduced hygroscopicity and strength, while
hardness and stiffness is marginally affected. Mutual for these reactions, as well as
for the most noticeable color change to brown, is that they are strongly
temperature dependent which means a process technical advantage as the temperature level is
