TräCentrum North contribute with financing to the Vinnova funded project AkuLite The aim is to identify the specific challenges for existing noise environment in residential buildings with lightweight structures. The measurement and calculation methods currently used are designed for heavy structures, such as concrete. Practical experience has shown that many of the methods are not directly applicable to lightweight structures with reliable results.

Lightweight multi storey family houses are becoming more common. Driving forces are sustainability, industrialization and cost reductions in the construction sector. However, noise and vibration disturbances experienced by residents might become a problem, even if the building code requirements are fulfilled. Sound and vibration has thus become the new hindrance. The aim of this project is to develop sound and vibration criteria that fit better with human experience in lightweight buildings. The project includes development of methods, collection of data, analysis based on statistical methods and development of criteria. The project partners will participate actively in international standardization for rapid and efficient implementation in the building industry. This will strengthen the competitiveness of lightweight structures compared to heavyweight structures and remove hinders for international trade. The project will contribute to build long term competence together among the participating research and industry partners.
Aims and purpose:

The aims of the project are:

• to find objective descriptions of sound insulation, impact noise, vibrations and springiness that give an evaluation of the acoustic quality that is independent of the type of frame system used in the building. With new evaluation measures for sound, vibrations and springiness, different constructions of the same acoustic class (A, B or C) will exhibit reasonably equal perception with regard to subjective response
• to maintain and further develop the competence within building acoustics (in particular regarding lightweight structures) at the participating research organisations in the long term perspective
• to increase cooperation between actors in the innovation system; universities, institutes, consultants and industry
• to increase the knowledge base in the industry and among consultants for future development and increased competitiveness of lightweight structures
