In the TCN project "Process Adaptation for durable wood products Part II: The role of the drying process of mold growth on the boards of outdoor products above ground?" the impact of the drying process on eye visible mold growth on boards in outdoor applications hs been studied. The project was conducted in 2009 by LTU Skellefteå and Wood Technology as project implementers.
Splintvedsbräder of spruce and pine have been dried in a laboratory drying kiln at different temperatures and different mold reduction measures with warming has been performed in the kiln after drying. These processes have been evaluated in a forced outdoor mold test. Significant differences in mold growth was detected between different drying schedules. During the project an idea came up of controlling nutrient migration towards various brädsidor which was considered interesting to examine in the project. The result of this method of control of nutrient migration during drying showed promising results
The purpose of this project application is to evaluate the experience of the previous project in full scale in industrial environments and to evaluate the effects of these industrial drying solutions and mold reduction measures using samples placed in authentic outdoor conditions. The purpose of the long-term trial is to evaluate whether the differences in mold between different drying methods as demonstrated in the forced outdoor mold test in project II can be verified. The purpose is also to in an industrial environments evaluate the consequences of changes in the drying process and the practical management of sideboards and weigh those consequences against the benefits of reduced mold timber.
