Seminar on trustworthy AI
About a dozen participants discussed AI and ethics with seminar leader Gustav Grund Pihlgren, doctoral student in machine learning at Luleå University of Technology. The seminar, organised by the Gender Smart Arena project in collaboration with the machine learning research group, opened with a presentation on the European Commission’s Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.
The goal of the EU guidelines is to promote trustworthy AI. Trustworthy AI has three components: a) it should be lawful, complying with all applicable laws and regulations; b) it should be ethical, ensuring adherence to ethical principles and values; and c) it should be robust, both from a technical and social perspective, given that even with good intentions, AI systems can cause unintentional harm. Each component is necessary, but not sufficient in isolation, for the creation of trustworthy AI.
Preferably, all three components must function together, harmoniously, and overlap with one another. If, in practice, there are tensions between these components, society must strive to resolve them.
