PERCCOM at Hydro66

Welcome day for exchange students in green IT

Published: 15 September 2015

An introduction day took place in Luleå and Boden for a group of newly arrived master students from the program PERCCOM.

Sumeet Thombre is one of the PERCCOM students that will study at LTU during the coming year and do his master thesis at Skellefteå campus.

Sumeet says: "I thought the introduction day was very well organised by Professor Karl Andersson. It had top notch arrangements and a good confluence of educational, social and cultural activities. We had very good technical sessions including our thesis structuring and a visit to Hydro66, close to Boden. At Hydro66 we saw their new data center and got a good understanding of their research and deployment techniques. Actually, I was already aware of the fact that Luleå and Boden had data centers before coming there, because I read a detailed article about data centers and Facebook in the SAS flight magazine while flying to Stockholm."

Sumeet continues: "During the introday, we also had a guided tour of the Gammelstad old Church town as well as the Boden fortress, a place of historical importance as a Swedish fortification against the Russians. Both places were very interesting and gave us some insight into the history and culture of Sweden. All in all, it was a unique experience, from witnessing auroras to scenic landscapes to having swedish "fika" to the dinner with smoked reindeer and lingonberries and more. I relished every moment!"

ICT for sustainable development

The PERCCOM program is a master's degree in computer science with a focus on Green IT and IT for sustainable development. It is the only Erasmus program in this field and students are trained both for a continued career in academia, as for jobs in the industry. The goal is that students learn to create resource-efficient computer systems with applications that take into account and focuses on sustainable development and environmental awareness.

Of the 17 students who graduated recently, half of them already got doctoral position at various locations in Europe.
