Kick off for large railway project

A high-tech railway project "ePilot119" led by Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in cooperation with the Swedish Transport Administration has just begun. In Long term it's about implementation of eMaintenance throughout the Swedish railway system and thus increase safety and minimize disruptions, especially in connection with various types of winter-related problems

- With ePilot 119, we take the first step to realize the state of the art e-maintenance system, with sensors, internet and communication technology which will give users customized tools to pursue a possibel to plan, safe and effective maintenance of the Swedish railway system, says Ramin Karim, associate professor and head of development at Luleå University.

Research before ePilot119 has been developed within LTU's railway technical center, JVTC and at the University eMaintenance LAB. To coordinate and collect information in the manner developed in research at Luleå University of Technology and applied in this project is unique in its kind.

- The approach we use to gather information and share it in a safe way, it seems to me that we are the world leader in in this field, says Ramin Karim.

The development was done in close cooperation with the Swedish Transport Administration who invests 14 million SEK over three years in the project. ePilot119 is a first step and includes the track part 119 between Luleå and Boden. There on a test section are a number of detectors and sensors where information can be retrieved about the condition of locomotives and wagons, but also on the railway infrastructure such as tracks and switches. This together with different players that own the infrastructure, traffic, maintenance contractors, etc. and their respective information systems form a complex body of information.

- By using existing information and communication technology and collaboration we can with new ways share information mutually for joint decision so that we optimize the railway system based on the big picture, says Peter Söderholm, Swedish Transport Administration who also is an adjunct professor at Luleå University of Technology.

ePilot 119 is the first step where the idea is that it will eventually be implemented in multi-track pieces in different parts of the country. The goal is that the investment will result in fewer disruptions, less interference times, better availability and a more efficient maintenance of higher quality. Project ePilot 119 was presented on Tuesday, 10 December, for a range of actors in the railway industry, for example, Green Cargo, SJ, Euromaint, Infranord and others.
