This is the second time that Luleå University of Technology arranges 5-TEK, with the aim of increasing the interest for technical education among young women.
The first time was a success and also this year, the 100 places were full just a few days after the invitations were sent out to female students at the upper secondary school's natural science and technology programs.
– It is very positive that the interest is so great. For me, it is important to actively contribute to girls and women thinking about technical educations as gender neutral – there is nothing male or female linked to education. Technical educations are for me strongly associated with creativity, innovation, problem solving and the power to shape our future society. It is important that we get more girls to study these education programmes, says Luleå University of Technology's Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
Contribute to a more sustainable future
During their three days in Luleå, the 5-TEK participants get to meet students and researchers and get to know their peers. On the program 24-26 February there are a number of different workshops, where the participants, among other things, can learn more about bridge construction, investigate how it is possible to manufacture mobile phones in a more sustainable way, deepen the exploration methods to find ore minerals in the bedrock and get an insight into the fire engineer's work.
– At Luleå University of Technology, we have a strong focus on how our education and research can contribute to more sustainable societies. In this work, our engineering education programmes are very important. It is through knowledge of new technology, sustainable energy systems, new materials, smart machines and innovative transport that we can create an attractive and sustainable society and address the major challenges that we face nationally and internationally, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
