Elite sport-friendly university

Published: 28 November 2019

The Swedish Sports Federation has appointed Luleå University of Technology to an elite sport-friendly university from August 2020. This means that we provide support to top-level athletes in their dual careers; academic studies and elite sports.

As an elite sport-friendly university, we offer you as a top athlete a course of study adapted to dual careers. Together with your study counselor you set up a plan for how you can complete your education (programme or course), as well as practice your sport at an elite level.

The opportunity is aimed at those who practice elite sports to such an extent that study adjustments of various kinds are necessary to be able to combine both initiatives. In accordance with the guidelines of the Swedish National Sports Federation, the sport must be included in one of the federation's 72 special sports federations.

How can you become an elite sports student?

  • You must be active in a sport connected to the Swedish National Sports Federation (RF).
  • You must fulfill the requirements that RF has set: you must be "a potential or current national team athlete (senior or junior)" or "a player in the highest league in team sports". It is every special sports association that assesses whether you meet the requirements.
  • You must also be admitted to an education at Luleå University of Technology. You apply and are accepted into education under the same conditions as all other prospective students.
  • In addition, Luleå University of Technology also offers individual athletes at national championship level (as lowest) and team athletes in the second highest division an opportunity to sign an elite sports contract directly with the university. More information on this here.
