´I am a mountain hiker and skiing environment nerd´

Published: 20 February 2019

Lina Hällström is a teacher at the Master Programme in Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

"Who am I? A few years ago I had probably been described as one of two handball goalkeepers in BBK's women's team. Today, hardly any part of the handball remains in my life. My training is now mainly about long-distance running and cross-country skiing."

Last year's Celebrity in The City of Boden

"The team cohesion that disappeared with the handball I nowadays get nowhere else. If you are looking for me on Facebook you would, through my frequent status updates on integration, understand that I am one of three women who run the non-profit Swedish school Let's Go Swedish. Four hours a week I meet a group of wonderful people from all over the world. For almost five years, we have had over 400 friends at our school and last year voted for the prestigious Bodensare."

Getting closer to a doctoral degree

"In addition, I see myself as a mountain hiker, top-down skiing, detail-oriented environmental fury with a licentiate degree in applied geochemistry and with a pursuit of a doctoral title. I know, applied geochemistry does not say much to those who are not familiar (perhaps not the licentiate degree either). The words mean that I work in a research group at Luleå University of Technology that handles environmental problems both in the natural environment and in the mining industry. In my work, I evaluate the new concept "Remining". This means the possibility of cleaning up historically old sins from the mining industry by creating new mines from the old waste. This means that you should remove pollutants from nature and at the same time extract metals in Sweden, well where?"

Want to change the world for the better

"I have long had the goal of changing the world for the better, both in environmental and integration issues. This is what my students at Let's Go Swedish often have to do when I force them to read texts about plastics in the oceans, the importance of ecosystems, space, recycling or other things in my own area of interest. As I mentioned in the introduction, work opportunities and development of the countryside, Boden and Norrbotten are also something that is very much about my heart."
