Course Aim
On completion of the course, the students should be able to apply an exploratory, problemizing and scientific approach to the work that teachers perform in practice, which implies being able to • formulate, describe, analyse and elaborate, in a scientific manner, problem areas related to teachers’ daily work; • reflect on and analyse their knowledge of teachers’ mission in relation to previous research and theories relevant to the mission; • constructively and critically review scientific works in various problem areas related to teachers’ daily work; • complete, present and defend a written scientific work.

The subject and research content to be dealt with is dependent on each student’s choice of problem area and approach to the problem.

The teaching is conducted in the form of memo seminars. Before each seminar, the students should prepare a written plan for the scientific work to be discussed in the seminar. Some of the teaching consists of individual or group supervision. Before each supervision session the students should prepare written material with questions to be dealt with. In the group supervision sessions, each student should present critical and constructive views on some other student’s written material.

The examination consists of each student completing a written scientific report (degree project). In addition to the report, each student is to both defend her/his own essay and examine another essay in a public seminar. An overall assessment is made using the marking scale U (Fail), G (Pass) and VG (Pass with Distinction). The degree project may be written in Swedish or English.

With relevance to the educational mission, the students should • have an understanding of the theory of science and methods, data collection and analysis through observations, interviews and inquiries; • be able to search for and retrieve information; • be able to examine scientific sources critically and in the perspective of research ethics; • have an understanding of central theoretical schools relevant to the educational mission. Continued from Prerequisites: A teaching degree for upper secondary schools requires a Pass for two specialisations/advanced courses of 90/120 credit points. Exception: the immediately previous 30-point module may have a Pass of at least 22.5 crps.
