Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and Knowledge of the theoretical and philosophical bases of occupational therapy and the areas of responsibility and activity of the profession. Knowledge and skills in collecting information about, and the ability to describe, the client and his/her occupational profile. Knowledge of and ability to review scientific studies critically and collect data. Occupational Therapy 30 credits. Course Aim
The student should further develop knowledge and skills from previously introduced concepts and theoretical approaches to occupational therapy as well as related knowledge. This will give support for reflection, reasoning and decision making in a client-centred approach with clients and groups with different disabilities due to illness or injury. Upon completion of the course, the student will, in the context of current laws and regulations, and with a scientific and ethical approach, meet the following objectives related to the course content:
  • use, justify and explain the choice of theoretical approaches in occupational therapy and related knowledge in the selection of occupational therapy interventions in client work at the individual and group level
  • describe and explain how a professional approach is used and how an ethical awareness is affected by different contexts.
  • choose, explain, justify and use appropriate methods and instruments for examination/assessment of activity/activity limitations and participation/participation restrictions with a special focus on the activity areas of personal and instrumental activities of daily living.
  • observe clients' occupational performance and identify and describe clients' occupational dysfunction based on the above activity areas.
  • formulate objectives based on clients' occupational profiles suggest and plan relevant measures to prevent, improve and compensate for reduced capacity for activity and participation.
  • give information about occupational therapy to clients and their significant others in order to promote clients' activity and participation.

Basic guidelines for the occupational therapist's interventions, values and approaches are included in the course in order to facilitate activity and participation for individuals with disability. Focus is on the activity areas personal care and housing. The course is based on the occupational therapy process and a client centred approach as well as reflection on ethics and attitude. The course contains application of methods for investigation and measures as well as theoretical approaches with a focus on personal activities in the daily life. These measures are primarily focused on the individual and group level as well as to the surrounding environment primarily within the activity area. The measures can be preventive, enhancing and compensatory and are directed towards individuals of varying ages and with different disabilities, taking into account sex/gender and ethnicity. The course includes practical sections where skills in different methods are trained when it comes to personal care and housing.  The course also contains critical reflection around the future professional role as occupational therapist including amongst other things the importance of evidence-based occupational therapy

The course is in a distance learning format and is mainly web-based. Computer experience and access to an Internet connection equivalent to at least ADSL with headset and web camera are required for the studies. Parts of the course take place on a campus where most practical exercises and certain examinations are located. The course is based on the student actively seeking knowledge and solving problems through an examining and critically reflecting working approach. This means that the student should take responsibility by actively contributing to the achievement of course objectives through the planning of content and time. The course content is conducted with different client descriptions and client groups which are based on occupational therapy practice and the intervention is carried out so that occupational therapy activities will resemble real life situations. The contents of the course are delivered through lectures, literature studies, group exercise, method exercises, oral and written presentations and seminars. Study visits and field studies in occupational therapy practice settings, which the student is expected to arrange independently, are also included in the course. Course requirements are compulsory attendance and an active participation in practical exercises and seminars as well as completed study assignments in accordance with the instructions in the study guide.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
To pass the course, it is required that the student achieves the course objectives through the following examination sections:
  • objectives one to six are examined through attendance at practical exercises and seminar and written documentation of an occupational therapy programme.
  • objectives two to six are examined through attendance at practical exercises and seminars and documentation of environmental interventions according to the occupational therapy process
  • objectives one to five are examined through an individual written online examination

Grading criteria for Pass and Pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.

This is a first-cycle course. Passing this course fulfils specific entry requirements for fieldwork placement courses. Study guide is provided in the course room in Canvas.
