Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and Knowledge of and skills in describing the philosophic basis of occupational therapy, core concepts and the areas of responsibility and activity of the profession. Knowledge of occupation through the life cycle and the importance of the activity pattern for health. Skills in carrying out a scientific project with quantitative data. Course Aim
The student will develop the knowledge and skills to carry out the occupational therapy process with a focus on collecting information about and describing clients' occupational needs and problems, as well as developing an understanding of the personal value when meeting other people. The student should also develop knowledge of models that describe human activity and skills in implementing activity analysis. Furthermore, the student will develop basic knowledge and skills to collect and analyse data from a quantitative approach. Upon completion of the course, the student will, in the context of current laws and regulations, and with a scientific and ethical approach, meet the following objectives related to the course content:
  • describe activity models in occupational therapy and their concepts
  • describe the different parts of the occupational therapy process
  • describe and give examples of how investigation, intervention and evaluation can be used in occupational therapy activities
  • use interview and observation as methods for investigation of individuals' activities and occupational performance and describe clients' activity profiles and activity levels
  • perform activity analyses and describe activity requirements
  • explain basic scientific concepts and discuss scientific literature, results and evidence
  • use questionnaires as a method to collect and interpret data and present results with descriptive statistics in a scientific report
  • show self-awareness and empathetic ability by reflecting on personal and professional fundamental values to support the occupational therapist's professional role

The course contains basic knowledge of and skills in the execution of the occupational therapy process with a focus on examination/assessment of clients' activity needs and problems based on different methods and assessment instruments. The course also contains basic knowledge of and skills in carrying out activity analyses.  Knowledge development in activity models and concepts in occupational therapy and basic knowledge about scientific theoretical concepts and quantitative methodology for data collection and analysis are also included in the course.

The course is in a distance learning format and is mainly web-based. Computer experience and access to an Internet connection equivalent to at least ADSL with headset and web camera are required for the studies. Parts of the course are located on campus where most practical exercises, seminars and examinations take place. In order to complete the course, the student should actively seek knowledge and solve problems using an inquiring and critically reflective approach. This means that the student should take responsibility by actively contributing to the achievement of course objectives through the planning of content and time. The contents of the course are delivered through literature studies, group exercises, practical exercises, field studies, lectures, oral and written presentations and seminars. Course requirements are compulsory attendance and an active participation in practical exercises and seminars and completed study assignments in accordance with the instructions in the study guide.

To pass the course, it is required that the student achieve the course objectives through the following examination sections:
  • objective one is examined through attendance at a seminar and an individual written online exam
  • objectives one to five and eight are examined through attendance at practical exercises and seminars and written documentation of a client case according to the occupational therapy process
  • objectives six and seven are examined through attendance at a practical exercise and seminar as well as documentation in a scientific report.
Grading criteria for Pass and Pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.

This is a first-cycle course. Passing this course fulfils the entry requirements for fieldwork placement courses. Study guide is provided in the course room in Canvas.
