In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Course Aim
After having completed the course, using a scientific and ethical approach the student will be able to:
  • Describe and compare different theories of developmental psychology
  • Explain and reflect on how people may react to difficult life situations and traumatic events
  • Describe the relationship between psychological factors and reactions related to human health/ill health
  • Explain and reflect on the interaction between human thoughts, feelings, behaviour and surrounding society
  • Reflect on and describe how perspectives on sex/gender and sexual orientation can affect individual identity and daily life and how equality is created throughout life and in society
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and the capacity for empathy through reflection on their own learning and knowledge development

Teaching and learning take place through an introduction to each area, after which the student will work on self-directed studies, attend lectures and work on cases. The knowledge is processed through group discussions, workshops and teacher-led seminars. The learning is focused on fundamental knowledge in the subject for both personal development, as well as understanding of client situations in different contexts within the home and in the community. The knowledge is targeted towards the future profession of occupational therapist.


The learning outcomes for the course are examined on an ongoing basis and to achieve a pass in the course, the student is required to achieve the learning outcomes for the course.

The learning outcomes are examined through written and verbal tests in the form of assignment submissions, seminars and presentations. Grading criteria for a Pass or Pass (with distinction) are specified in the study guide.


The course is a first cycle course within the occupational therapy programme. A Pass grade for this course constitutes a special entry requirement for placement courses. The study guide is available in the course room in Canvas.
