Course Aim
The student should, on completion of the course, from advanced knowledge in qualitative research methods, philosophy of science and ethics, be able to:
  1. Explain and evaluate scientific theoretical and ethical perspectives of relevance for research in occupational therapy
  2. Critically review and evaluate qualitative empirical studies in occupational therapy
  3. Formulate subject-specific scientific issues for occupational therapy with a qualitative approach
  4. Analyse qualitative data by comparing, seeing relationships and critically processing data
  5. Argue in writing, relate and discuss qualitative research approaches in relation to the subject occupational therapy.

  • Scientific methods and philosophy of science related to research with qualitative approaches in occupational therapy.
  • Review and evaluate how qualitative methods are applied in research in the subject occupational therapy.
  • Application of qualitative research design in occupational therapy.
  • Research ethics issues in relation to qualitative methods in the subject occupational therapy.

The course has its educational basis in a knowledge-building working method. This working method is characterised by the student actively searching for and solving problems through an examining and critically reflective working method. The course will stimulate learning through oral and written presentation, practical exercises, article searching and review.

For the grade pass, it is required that the student achieve the course objectives through the following examination parts:
  • Objective 1 is examined through individual examination.
  • Objectives 2-5 are examined through written assignment
Grading criteria for pass and pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.

This course is given for second-cycle studies. Study supervision is provided in the course room in Canvas.

Transition terms
This course replaces A7008H Occupational Therapy second cycle 30 credits.
