Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and M0029M Calculus, M0030M Linear Algebra and Calculus, M0031M Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, F0004T Physics 1, F0006T Physics 3 or equivalent.

Course Aim
The student should acquire the following skills in the course:
- to know and be able to use fundamental concepts in hydro mechanics.
- to be able to use basic methods to analyze problems in hydro mechanics.
- to be able to apply these methods in areas of engineering importance such as pipe flow, pumps and turbines.

-Pascal´s law, hydrostatic forces on plane and curved surfaces, centre of pressure.
- Archimedes´ principle, stability.
Basic laws for fluids:
-Physical properties of fluids, viscosity, continuity and energy equations, momentum laws. Dimensional analysis:
-Similarity rules, Pl-theorem, model testing.
Pipe flow:
-Laminar/turbulent flow, friction factors, loss factors, surface roughness.
Pumps and turbines:
-The centrifugal pump: Velocity diagram, pump equation, similarity laws. Cavitation. Pumps and pipe systems. Impulse and reaction turbines.
Introduction to numerical simulation:
- Pipe flow
- Pump characteristics

Lectures, classroom teaching and laboratory experiment.

Written examination with differentiated grades. Passing the course requires completed lab reports. There can be alternative examination methods.
