Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and 30hp Applied Mathematics and 20hp Physics at the basic university level.

The selection is based on 1-165 credits.

Course Aim

The overall goal with this course is to provide the student with a fundamental understanding of photonic components as well as some skills in constructing optical systems.

At the end of this course the student should recognise and have knowledge about:
- Propagation o flight in different media.
- Interaction between photons and matter.
- Principles underlying various photonic components.

At the end of this course the student should be practically skilled at:
- Design and analyse an optical system.
- Use numerical tools to design an optical component.

- Photon optics
- Photon-matter interaction
- Laser amplifiers and lasers

The teaching consist of lectures, one practical laboratory and computer practices.

The course is examined through a assignment report (1,5hp), a written exam (4,5hp) and participation on computer practices (1,5hp).
