Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language + Swedish upper secondary school courses Physics 2, Chemistry 1, Mathematics 4 (specifik entry A9). Or: Swedish upper secondary school courses Physics B, Chemistry A, Mathematics E (specifik entry 9)

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Course Aim

The course provides fundamental knowledge about hydropower regulations, supervision and maintenance. At the conclusion of the course the students are expected to be able to describe the principal hydropower plant, account for its operation and maintenance, and explain the impact of hydropower on society and environment.

The student will furthermore be able to perform basic design calculations, apply hydrological models for discharge calculations, and describe the energy conversion to electricity and the regulatory system applicable to hydropower.


Hydropower basics: History of hydropower, and its effects on society and the environment. Field trip to hydropower dams along the Luleå river.

Dam engineering: Dam designs and their construction, filter design and internal erosion protection.

Dam hydraulics: Optimal design discharge, spillway design, seepage estimation.

Electricity generation: Turbines, generators, transformators.

Hydropower regulations: Regulatory system applicable to hydropower.

Group projects and computer exercises regarding dam safety.


The course consists of lectures, one field trip and one computer lab.


The course examination is based on the 3 group projects that will be performed during the course, and on the written exam. To receive a final grade, the students must also be present during the obligatory field trip. 


The course will be given in Swedish and is available as a distance course.
