Finite Element Method

The course provides an overview and theoretical background to the Finite Element Method and the most important steps within FEM for structural analysis. Students will calculate application examples with commercial software and discuss the results.

The aim of the course is to define and explain the steps in the Finite Element Method (FEM). To identify different finite elements and analysis types and when to use them. Understand the influence of element size, number of elements and element shape.  Modelling of boundary conditions and symmetry. To develop a FEM model, with the ATENA software and associated calculations of strains and stresses in a structural element.
