Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language + Swedish upper secondary school courses Physics 1b1/1a, Mathematics 2a/2b/2c (specifik entry A7). Or: Swedish upper secondary school courses Physics A, Mathematics B (specifik entry 7)

Selection

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
After the course the student should have acquired the ability to;
a) describe the life-support and resource generation structures and functions of the ecosystem
b) outline the significant environmental problems and explain its short and long term effects
c) describe and critically relate to the concept of sustainable development
d) describe and discuss environmental policy instruments in the fields of environmental economics, environmental politic and environmental law
e) explain how companies meet society's needs with the use of environmental tools
f) discuss the responsibility of the companies and their role for sustainable development, for example aspects regarding ethics, corruption, environment and equality
g) understand the role of technology as problem solver and as creator of problems from a perspective of sustainable development

Contents
- Basic ecology (including ecosystem structures and functions)
- Local, regional and global environmental problems and its impact on the environment in the short     and long term
- Background to the concept of sustainable development and the interplay and conflicts between the components of sustainable development
- Introduction to environmental economics (including environmental and energy policy instruments)
- Introduction to environmental law
- Corporate environmental and sustainability efforts with an emphasis on environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and sustainable product development (life cycle assessment, LCA)
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Realization
Lectures and seminars.

Examination
Written exam and written and oral presentations at seminars.

Remarks
The course can not be included in a degree together with the course V0015B, Sustainable Building.
Students must registerforo the courses themselves, or contact the ETS educational administration eduets@ltu.se, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
