Course Aim
On completion of the course, the student should:
  • Describe the diseases/ conditions that occur in intensive care, explain  its causes and treatment
  • Analyse, reflect on and, in collaboration with medical experts to assess and apply the intensive care under scientifically proven method  
  • Explain and evaluate the liquid electrolyte and acid-base balance
  • Understand and explain basic anesthesiology
  • Explain and describe the acute pediatrics care
  • Explain and describe the cardiac disorders
  • Explain and understand the pharmacological principles of drugs which occur in intensive care
  • Apply knowledge of quantitative research methods for data collection and analysis in the area intensive care


This knowledge constitutes a basis for coming nursing and placement courses and is a precondition for giving safe and secure nursing care in the future profession as a nurse in  intensive care.

The content of course elements and its teaching methods specifically geared towards future profession as a nurse in intensive care. Teaching methods vary with the individual studies, individual work and collaboration in groups, lectures, practical sessions and seminars. Different working methods active knowledge acquisition, group discussions and reflection are stimulated. Seminar and practical parts are compulsory components. As support for the individual studies the students are offered lectures via distance-bridging technology. The studies are carried out by means of detailed objectives and instructions in the study guide of the course

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
The course is examined by written individual examination and seminar and/or take-home examination.

 Alternative examination formats may be used.

This course is given for second-cycle studies. Study supervision is available in the university's learning management system.
