Course Aim
In the course the student shall
•    be able to independently collect, analyse and communicate medical information for diagnostics and treatment of the older patient
•    from evidence-based knowledge and best proven experience be familiar with the most common and most serious diseases' etiology,    pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnostics, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the older patient
•     in a critical way be able to formulate a problematic area in geriatric nursing and collect clinical data, analyse them and reflect on the perspective of praxis and theory
•    be familiar with statistical methods common in the presentation of research results within geriatric care

The course includes deepened studies of common/central problem areas in the geriatric patient. These fields are studied from a nursing and a medical perspective. Drug treatment and rehabilitation of the geriatric patient are also studied in the course.

The course is given in collaboration with Umeå University as half-time studies and is web-based. The studies are characterized by active searching for knowledge, problem solving and reflections based on evidence based knowledge. The studies have a starting point in the students existing knowledge and experiences in the area. In the structure of the course the use of cases of geriatric patients is an important way to illustrate the geriatric problem areas. The course has a clinic based assignment. The working methods vary between individual work, work in study groups, lectures, and literature studies. The contact between students and lecturers is facilitated through a web based platform. The working methods are adapted to expected study results and will vary during the course.
The content of the course will be based on available research knowledge and best practice.

A three-graded scale is used for grading: pass with distinction, pass or fail. The course is examined individually in the form of an examination seminar, a take-home examination and a written assignment. In order to pass the course the student has to pass in all examinations.
The student will get a final comprehensive grading of their achievements when all study assignments are approved and graded as passed.

Study supervision is provided in the course room in Canvas.
