Scientific Computing with Applications in Tribology

Are you interested in scientific computing with applications in Tribology? In this course, you will learn how to solve coupled solid- and fluid mechanics problems with methods based on optimization, integral equations, and PDE.

It is no longer sufficient for a computational engineer to model and simulate classic solid- and fluid mechanics problems to guarantee a sustainable development and circular economy. Requirements for increased service life, energy efficiency, reuse, remanufacturing, advocates the need for including the tribological aspects. To address these societal challenges, we offer a standalone course of 7.5 HP that is given at a 50% study rate.

Contact mechanics is one of the topics of the course, which includes convolutions with applications also in pattern recognition, language technology, signal analysis and in all engineering disciplines. Machine learning applied in wear simulation is another topic. Modeling of flows in narrow gaps with partial differential equations is also a topic. All in all, this makes the course both multidisciplinary and specific at the same time.

The topics are closely connected to the research area, the course is designed upon the CDIO initiative, and through collaborations in blended groups, learning takes place interpersonally. The examination of the different subprojects, where theory is translated into practice through the development of different types of calculation models, is carried out continuously through peer-2-peer review of the written reports and the developed calculation programs. To ensure individual-level goal fulfillment, the course ends with oral examination.
