Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and Basic entry requirements and three years of post-secondary nursing training from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland; the National Swedish Board of Health and Welfare issued a decision to investigate in the form of a proficiency test for nurses. A pass in Swedish according to the provisions for basic entry requirements for the first cycle, Swedish B or Swedish 3, with the lowest grade of pass/E.

Course Aim
At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  •  account for the key concepts, theories and models in healthcare
  •  account for the importance of equality, ethics in nursing people over a lifetime
  •  account for communication theories as a tool in nursing
  •  account for nurses’ area of expertise and have knowledge of other healthcare professionals’ skills
  •  account for the importance of the research process and evidence-based nursing 

Competence and skills 

  • write and orally report an individual care plan based on the nursing process and ethical awareness
  • apply communication methodology in nursing
  • present, discuss and justify evidence-based facts 

Judgement and approach 

  • reflect on and discuss nurses’ ethical values in the care relationship
  • reflect on the importance of nurses’ critical approach

  • nurses’ area of expertise in relation to other healthcare professionals
  • core concepts of nursing; human beings, health, the environment and nursing practice
  • person-centred care in relation to a person’s lifetime
  • the nursing process
  • the research process and evidence-based nursing
  • care ethics, intersectionality, equality and criticism of norms related to human health over a lifetime
  • communication and communication methodology

Learning takes place through activities that promote interaction between students themselves and between teachers and students. In this course, for example, literature studies, group work, laboratory experiments/simulations, workshops and seminars are used to aid student learning.Lectures are given in the chosen knowledge areas. Participation in laboratory experiments/simulations, workshops and seminars is mandatory.

The course is examined individually or in groups through written and/or oral examinations. To pass the course the learning objectives must be met, which means a pass in the course as well as active participation in the mandatory parts. Grades are set by the examiner.


The course is given in the first-cycle study program within supplementary training for nurses. Having attained an approved standard (passing grade) for this course constitutes a special prerequisite for the VFU courses O0100H and O0101H in term 2 of the program plus a theoretical and practical final examination.
