Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and Basic entry requirements and three years of post-secondary nursing training from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland; decision to implement a proficiency test for nurses issued by the National Swedish Board of Health and Welfare. A pass in Swedish according to the provisions for basic entry requirements for the first cycle, Swedish B or Swedish 3, with the lowest grade of pass/E.

Course Aim
At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

Knowledge and understanding 

  • account for pathophysiology, aetiology, epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment, the nursing process and prevention in medical and surgical diseases
  • account for how ill health is manifested as symptoms, and how this affects the individual’s daily life from a lifetime perspective
  • account for the importance of equality, ender and socio-cultural aspects as well as equal access to good nursing care
  • account for statutes as well as local guidelines regarding the nursing profession within medical and surgical healthcare 

Competence and skills 

  • apply the planning, organisation and management of the daily work and function in a care team
  • interact with the patient, relatives, other nurses and representatives of other professions in healthcare
  • prioritise the patient’s needs, together with the patient and relatives, by identifying problems, risks and resource diagnoses and formulating care objectives, planning and evaluating nursing care measures
  • implement and use different methods to assess pain status as well as prevent pain and carry out pain treatment
  • implement and use different methods to assess nutritional status, risk of falling and pressure sores as well as take appropriate care measures
  • apply and be responsible for reducing the risk of infection and the spread of infection in accordance with the applicable regulations
  • count, prepare, administer and handle medications properly and in relation to the applicable statutes and legislation, and inform the patient about the effects and side effects of medication
  • oral and written report in accordance with SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) and record nursing activities in the appropriate medical record system
  • Handle medical equipment and use medical devices safely
  • critically examine and evaluate the quality of care based on evidence-based knowledge and proven experience

  • show judgement and the ability to apply an ethical and professional approach towards the patient and relatives of different ages
  • demonstrate the ability to identify their need for additional knowledge in order to develop their professional skills

Learning takes place through activities that promote interaction between students themselves and between teachers and students. In this course, for example, literature studies, group work, laboratory experiments/simulations, workshops and seminars are used to aid student learning.Lectures are given in the chosen knowledge areas. Participation in laboratory experiments/simulations, workshops, seminars and placements is mandatory.

The course is examined individually or in groups through written and/or oral examinations, as well as assessment of professional skills. To pass the course the learning objectives must be met, which means a pass in the course as well as active participation in the mandatory parts.

Only one re-examination/transfer is given for the course in relation to the placement. If there are special circumstances, additional retakes/transfers can be granted.  Special circumstances are those stated in Regulations of the National Agency for Higher Education HSVFS 1999:1.

Grades are set by the examiner.

The course is held in the first cycle as part of supplementary training for nurses and includes a placement. 

This course, containing components with a placement, is subject to Special Regulations for Placements according to the prefect decision of the Department of Health Sciences, Luleå University of Technology.
Passed course grades for this course constitute special eligibility for the last VFU course O0101H on the program and final exam
