The selection is based on 1-165 credits.



Course Aim
The overall objective of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge of a nurse's responsibility to plan, lead and develop nursing care. The student shall acquire knowledge about the organisation and governance of the healthcare system, in order to develop and improve care. The student shall also be able to critically reflect on personal and professional development and its importance to an ethical and professional approach.

Knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • describe methods for developing and improving healthcare
  • explain organisational conditions for a sustainable working environment and good nursing
  • explain and provide an account of conditions, models, laws and regulations of importance for the governance and management of healthcare 

Skills and abilities
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • identify the need for changes that contribute to quality and safe care, and propose such changes
  • identify the need for changes that contribute to a sustainable working environment, and propose such changes
  • demonstrate understanding of the importance of care culture in nursing work 

Judgement and approach
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • understand the nurse's responsibility for ensuring quality and safe care  

Module 2: Personal and Professional Development

Knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • Define and provide an account of a nurse's areas of competence and responsibility
  • describe theories and concepts for managing requirements and conflicts as a nurse 

Skills and abilities
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:  

  • reflect on and argue for a nurse's responsibility to lead nursing work
  • identify and apply strategies for managing requirements and conflicts as a nurse  

Judgement and approach
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • understand a nurse's responsibility for managing and organising care in collaboration with other professions
  • demonstrate self-knowledge, norm awareness and the ability to identify the need to continuously develop her/his skills
  • identify signs of moral and/or ethical stress in healthcare professionals and be able to propose measures

Realization
Each course occasion´s language and form is stated and appear on the course page on Luleå University of Technology's website.
The course is conducted in the form of individual study, lectures, assignments and seminars. Assignments and seminars are obligatory.

Examination
If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
A three-level scale is used for grading: Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G) or Fail (U). Achievement of the objectives of the course are evaluated via individual written examination, literature seminars and seminars. To pass the entire course, passing grades are required on all parts of the course, and compulsory parts must be completed.

Remarks
A passing grade in this course is a specific admission requirement for courses entailing clinical practice and degree projects.

Transition terms
This programme curriculum is valid from the autumn semester of 2018 for all students who are admitted to the programme at that time. Programme coordinators and heads of department decide on individual study plans for students who have been admitted to a previous programme curriculum and resume their studies according to the current programme curriculum following a break in their studies. 

If a course has ceased to be given or has undergone major changes, the students will be offered two opportunities for examination in the first year after the change has taken place, and then once a year for a further 2 years, based on the course syllabus that applied at the time of registration.
