The selection is based on 20-285 credits



Course Aim

On completion of the course, under supervision and based on an ethical approach, the student should be able to:
- argue for the choice of nursing interventions through applying an evidence-based approach and ethical principles
 - apply advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in perioperative nursing care and medically indicated measures for people of all ages undergoing surgery of a general nature
 - describe the function of and use medical technology within theatre nursing
 - describe and apply qualitative research methods for data analysis with a focus on thematic content analysis
 - propose methods for planning, monitoring and developing activities within theatre nursing
 - apply existing laws and statutes
 - document care and nursing
 - document scientifically

Being ill and undergoing an emergency or planned surgery and the experience of being a relative of the patient
Qualitative research methods for data collection: the application of interview and observation methodology
Qualitative research methods for data analysis with a focus on thematic content analysis
Ethics
Research ethics
Perioperative nursing care of people of all ages and instrumentation within general, urological and gynaecological surgery
Preventing surgical infections
Procurement of biological specimens and samples for accurate diagnosis
Medically indicated measures and medical technology
Evidence-based nursing
Documentation of care and nursing
Organisation and teamwork within theatre nursing
Current laws and statutes
Scientific documentation and critical review

Realization

Teaching and learning take place through individual studies, lectures, study assignments and placement under supervision. Attendance is mandatory during placement and seminars. 


Examination

Written examination. Assessment of professional competence. Passing the course requires that all parts of the course are completed and passed.

Grading criteria for pass and pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.

Only one transfer is given for a course with regard to placement. If special reasons are found to exist, an additional transfer may be granted. Special reasons refers to those specified in instructions from the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1.


Remarks

This course is given for second-cycle studies within specialist training to become an operating room nurse, and it involves placement.

This course, with clinical placement are subject to Special rules regarding clinical placement according to Head of Department decision.  

Study supervision is provided in the course room in Canvas.
