Course Aim
After successfully completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:
  • plan, implement and evaluate measures that promote health and prevent ill-health in individuals with mental illness
  • independently observe, assess, take remedial measures and evaluate complex the needs for care in mental illness
  • be independently responsible for the care of patients within the psychiatric nurse’s area of ​​responsibility
  • lead the nursing work in psychiatric care
  • apply evidence-based nursing
  • apply applicable statutes and regulations
  • document scientifically


Meeting and interaction with the patient’s immediate family
Nursing interventions and treatment methods with a specialization in psychiatric care
Documentation of medical care and nursing
 Applicable statutes and regulations
Work to prevent and deal with violent situations
Knowledge-based nursing
Scientific documentation and critical approach


Teaching and learning takes place by means of self-directed independent studies, lectures, study assignments, seminars and a practicum/internship under supervision. Participation in seminars and the practicum/internship placement is mandatory.


Individual written report.
The student’s professional skills and expertise is assessed continuously by means of written reflection plus in the form of tripartite discussions.
To receive a passing grade in the course, all parts of the course must be successfully completed and approved.
Ordinarily only one re-examination opportunity/reassignment will be allowed for the course in respect of the practicum/internship. If there are special reasons, an additional re-examination/reassignment may be granted. What is meant by “special reasons” are those reasons stated in the Regulations of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1.


The course is offered as part of a second-cycle study program in specialist training to become a nurse in psychiatric care and is a practicum/internship placement.
