Course Aim
On completion of the course the student shall have advanced knowledge in conducting academic work within nursing with a specialisation in theatre nursing. This involves the ability to, under supervision:
• plan, carry out and document academic work in the subject of nursing in theatre nursing
• formulate an academic research question relating to nursing
• systematic search for academic literature in electronic databases
• critically examine and evaluate academic studies
• apply the principles of research ethics and write a research ethics application

In this course the student shall plan, carry out and document academic work. This includes searching for and critically examining academic literature in databases relevant to the subject of nursing, as well as data collection, analysis and the compilation of data. The course also includes training and assuming both the roles of thesis author and external reviewer, as well as applying knowledge on relevant research design and research ethics.

The course takes the form of an independent project with mandatory supervision. The supervisor is appointed by the department. Regular seminars that follow the work process are included in the course; attendance at the seminars is mandatory.


The thesis is examined in the form of a written report to be presented at a seminar involving the thesis author and an external reviewer.

Grading criteria for pass and pass with distinction are stated in the study guide.


This course is given for second-cycle studies within specialist training with a focus on theatre nursing.
