Course Aim
After course completion, the student shall be able to:
  • describe how severely ill or injured persons and their relatives may experience their altered life situation in connection with intensive care or an operation
  • describe various qualitative research methods and be able to formulate research questions based on qualitative research design
  • based on an ethical approach and under supervision, assess the need for, plan, implement, evaluate and document nursing and medically indicated measures for persons being cared for in intensive care or following an operation
  • provide an account of the function of medical technology in intensive care, and use it under supervision
  • demonstrate self-knowledge and the ability to empathise
  • apply applicable laws and statutes
  • documenting care and nursing
  • document in a scientific manner
  • identify the need for further knowledge in order to continuously develop her/his skills, in order to be able to conduct safe care

Teaching and learning is conducted in the form of independent study, lectures, assignments, seminars and supervised clinical practice. Participation in seminars and clinical practice is compulsory.

Written examination and/or seminar
Assessment of professional competence.

The grading criteria for G (Pass) are specified in the study guide.

As concerns the clinical practice, only one relocation is permitted for the course. One more relocation may be granted if special reasons to do so exist. “Special” reasons are the reasons set out in regulations from the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1.

aThe course is given at the advanced level, within the context of specialist training to become an intensive care nurse, and clinical practice are a compulsory component of the course.

This course, which contains modules with clinical practice (clinical practice modules), is subject to ‘Specific Rules for Clinical Practice’, pursuant to a decision by the Head of the Department of Health Sciences, Luleå University of Technology. 

A passing grade in this course is a specific admission requirement for courses that entail clinical practice.
