Course Aim
After successfully completing the course, the student is expected to be able to do the following based on an ethical approach:
  • evaluate, plan, implement and evaluate measures to promote good health and prevent ill-health from a gender equality, equal treatment and cultural perspective
  • analyze, evaluate and motivate the persons/patients need for nursing
  • propose nursing and medical interventions in telephone counseling and clinic visits in primary care
  • formulate a research question and justify its scientific theoretical basis
  • apply interview methodology
  • document scientifically
  • documenting care and nursing
  • critically review and evaluate research results
  • analyze the importance of interaction and collaboration between various professional skills
  • apply the relevant statutes and regulations

Teaching and learning takes place by means of self-directed independent studies, application of theoretical knowledge, and a practicum/internship placement (VFU). The practicum/internship placement takes place under academic supervision. Lectures will be given in selected course sections. Attendance in laboratory sessions, seminars and the practicum/internship placement is mandatory.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
A two-grade grading scale is used for grades: Pass (G) or Fail (U). The successful attainment of the objectives for the course is assessed via an individual examination, plus the assessment of professional skills and expertise during the VFU. To receive a passing grade in the course for a full course, a passing grade is required for all parts and that the required curricular segments have been completed.

Ordinarily only one re-examination opportunity/reassignment will be allowed for the course in respect of the practicum/internship. If there are special reasons, an additional re-examination/reassignment may be granted. What is meant by “special reasons” are those reasons stated in the Regulations of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1.

The course is offered as part of a second-cycle study program within the Specialist Nurse Program with a focus on the district nurse.

This course, which contains a curricular segment with a practicum/internship (VFU element), is encompassed within the Special Rules for practicum/internship placements according to the decision of the Head of Department at the Department of Health Sciences, Luleå University of Technology. Having attained an approved standard (passing grade) for the VFU curricular segment in this course constitutes a special prerequisite for courses containing a practicum/internship element.
