Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and 30 credits completed courses with at least a passing grade in the subject psychology. This must include the course P0073A Social Science Quantitative Method 1, 7.5 credits or equivalent.

Course Aim
Knowledge and understanding

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic knowledge and understanding of:

  • Different experimental methods in psychology
  • How experimental methods can be applied in different psychological research areas 

Skills and abilities

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic ability to:

  • Search for and gather relevant information in scientific problems
  • Formulate a psychological question that can be tested empirically with an experimental method
  • Initiate, plan and conduct an experimental study
  • Analyze and evaluate collected empirical information
  • Present information in writing according to scientific forms
  • Compile and orally present information to people without special knowledge in the field
  • Critically discuss experimental method

Appraisal and approach 

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic ability to:

  • Make assessments with regard to scientific aspects
  • Make assessments with regard to ethical aspects

In the course, the students are trained to carry out a scientific experiment where a psychological issue is tested in practice. The course also deals with possible and current research areas in psychology that are suitable for experimental method. The course is also a training in scientific writing and oral presentation in the field of psychology.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Experimental methodology
  • Scientific writing
  • Psychological research areas

The teaching is based on self-study, lectures, seminars, and laboratory work that includes data collection through experimental study as well as oral and written presentation. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding knowledge and understanding , the student should independently study the specified course literature and other literature / material provided during the course, take part in lectures and complete recommended exercises. The student must also participate actively during seminars. 

To achieve the course's goals regarding skill and ability , the student should attend lessons and perform recommended exercises. In addition, the student must participate actively in the seminar assignments and the implementation of the laboratory assignment which includes both oral and written presentation. In the laboratory assignment, the ability to collect information through experimental study, evaluate and analyze information, and in a scientific manner in writing and orally present information is trained. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding appraisal and approach , the student must actively participate in the seminars and participate in all parts of the work with the laboratory assignment. 

Teaching resources are provided and some communication and submissions take place via the internet-based course platform Canvas. This means specific requirements for technical equipment and competence. 

Parts of the implementation of the course may be given in English.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
The course is examined through a laboratory assignment (6.0 credits, grading scale: U G) and seminar assignments (1.5 credits, grade scale: U G). 

Laboratory assignment
In the examination form laboratory assignment, the following elements are examined: planning and implementation of experimental study, written presentation, as well as oral presentation and opposition at a mandatory seminar day. The laboratory assignment is examined in groups and individually. 

Seminar assignments
Examination through mandatory attendance and active participation during seminars. 

In the event of impediment, examination forms with mandatory attendance can be replaced by an equivalent compensation assignment. All components of the examination must be completed for the final grade in the course.

Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact HLT:s educational administration, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
