The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
Knowledge and understanding

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic knowledge and understanding of:

  • The fields of psychology and their central concepts, theories and classical studies
  • Scientific methods applied in psychology

Skills and abilities

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic ability to:

  • Gather empirical information through experimental study
  • Compile and orally present information to people without special knowledge in the field

Appraisal and approach 

After completing the course, the student should be able to show basic ability to:

  • Make assessments with regard to scientific aspects 

Contents
The course gives an introduction to the subject of psychology and covers basic psychological theories, studies, methods and concepts. 

The following areas will be covered:

  • Biological psychology
  • Developmental psychology
  • Cognitive psychology
  • Motivational psychology
  • Personality psychology
  • Social psychology
  • Scientific methods

Realization
Each course occasion´s language and form is stated and appear on the course page on Luleå University of Technology's website.
All teaching is web-based and is mainly based on self-study, recorded lectures, lessons with discussions and exercises, and laboratory assignment with oral presentation. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding knowledge and understanding , the student should independently study the specified course literature and other literature / material provided during the course, take part in lectures and lessons, and complete recommended exercises. 

To achieve the course's goals regarding skill and ability , the student should attend lessons and perform recommended exercises. In addition, the student must participate actively in the implementation of the laboratory assignment and in oral presentation. In the laboratory assignment, the ability to collect information through experimental study, and compile and present information orally is trained. The laboratory assignment related to skill and ability are performed through collaboration in groups. 

In order to achieve the course's goals regarding appraisal and approach , the student must actively participate in the laboratory assignment. 

Teaching resources are provided and all communication take place via the internet-based course platform Canvas. This means specific requirements for technical equipment and competence. 

Parts of the implementation of the course may be given in English.

 


Examination
If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
The course is examined through an individual written examination (6.0 credits, grading scale: U G VG) and laboratory assignment (1.5 credits, grade scale: U G).

The laboratory assignment is examined through mandatory attendance during a seminar day with oral presentation. 

In the event of impediment, examination forms with mandatory attendance can be replaced by an equivalent compensation assignment. All components of the examination must be completed for the final grade in the course. Final grades correspond to grades in the examination part written exam (6.0 credits, grade scale U G VG), provided that the other examination parts are approved.


Remarks
Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact HLT:s educational administration eduhlt@ltu.se, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
